Why this advice doesn't work for HSPs

“Don’t take things personally.”
I’m sure you’ve heard this business ‘advice’ at some point while attending post-secondary studies, when chatting with colleagues, or during your work life. When this mantra is uttered, most people tend to reply with something like, “Oh, yes, absolutely. Great advice; thank you.”
However, for Highly Sensitive People (HSPs), advising that we not take things personally, just doesn’t work.
Things ‘hit different’ for us. Obvs, we are sensitive people who, for better or worse, pick up on everyone’s energy and moods. This is why we are excellent at building relationships with clients and excel at liaising with people in general but can take much longer to ‘get over’ conflicts and disagreements - whether at work or in our personal lives.
The caveat is that general business advice such as “don’t take things personally” or similarly, “leave your emotions at the door” is meaningless. I’ll argue that we’re all human beings with thoughts, feelings, and emotions. And HSPs are especially aware of our emotions and interactions and therefore cannot NOT take things personally or turn off their emotions.
We grow our resilience by being our authentic selves - nurturing our positive attributes, centering our integrity, and trusting our instincts.
So, the next time one tells you: “don’t take things personally”… my suggestion is to respond, “No thanks! I’m a living, breathing person and, therefore, I take everything personally.” 😊

This absolutely resonated with me. There's no way to check out your emotions at the door if you do feel things deeply.
