I have worked with agencies, and I have found the most successful engagements are where we are both transparent about our fees; I expect the agency to add a mark-up, but I do not take a haircut. When you pitch to an agency, you must have a specific niche. For instance, I write in finance, real estate, and law, having worked in those sectors. It's helped me stand out in the crowd and garner the rate I expect.

Good points, Judi. As we grow in experience and confidence, we can charge more, negotiate and understand when something's fair and/or worth taking on or if we should let that project or client go.

I'm with you on this, Lisa. I got some of my best projects from agencies when I worked as a freelance copy writer. It was only for a few years, but it was a positive experience.
